Safespace equipment are designed for adults and children with complex needs, including autism, epilepsy and challenging behaviours. The Safespace customised safe rooms, high sided and hi lo beds are used at home, in schools, hospitals and respite centres across the world.

Our specialist team have installed a number of Safespace solutions throughout Ireland. The Safespace can withstand the roughest treatment by both children and adults. It provides a space in which someone can sleep, move, roll or play freely, reducing the risk of injury by eliminating hard surfaces.

At John Preston we are are proud to be a distributor in Northern Ireland for this terrific range of products.

Safespace

The Safespace provides an extremely robust space that can be kicked, punched and head-butted. It provides a space in which someone can sleep, move, roll or play freely, reducing the risk of injury by eliminating hard surfaces.

The Safespace can make a huge difference when a person has safety issues, poor sleep patterns or behavioural difficulties. It can provide a safe play space, sleeping space or a calm area. Families often report a big improvement in the life and well-being of the person using it and a positive impact on the whole family.

Key features

  • Each Safespace is custom-made, with a door and window, aligned with the door and window of your own room. This allows for the use of curtains, light fittings, radiators and electric sockets, television, music and sensory equipment.
  • This helps to create a light airy, comfortable space, much more attractive and versatile than conventional room padding.
  • The walls of the Safespace are positioned 25cm away from any hard surfaces and flex out on impact, removing the risk of injury from hard surfaces, such as walls, radiator, in the room.
  • The floor has 75mm of foam under it, which absorbs much of the impact from anyone falling or landing heavily on it. This is adequate for most Safepace users and provides a surface which is stable enough to walk on.
  • If the Safespace could be used by someone who is likely to intentionally bang their head on the floor with a lot of force without wearing protective headgear, we would recommend the provision of a 75mm floor mat inside the Safepace.
  • Room sizes need to be at least 50cms (20") wider than the Safespace to allow the walls to flex out safely.

Safespace Hi-Lo

The Safespace Hi-Lo is a height-adjustable bed with flexible sides and a mesh ceiling. The flexibility of the Hi-Lo platform provides a comfortable working height for those providing care. The soft sides of the Safespace Hi-Li provide a comfortable, safe environment in which someone can sleep without the risk of injury from hard surfaces or moving parts, providing peace of mind for parents and carers.

Safespace Voyager

The Voyager travel bed is designed for holidays and respite care for those who need a low stimulation, safe environment for sleeping in. It is particularly useful for those with autism and who find change difficult, as it provides a consistent calm area that can be transported in the boot of a car, or taken as hold luggage on flights.

Key features

  • The Voyager is a free-standing structure consisting of a robust, but lightweight, aluminium frame, from which the soft sides can flex out on impact, requiring a clearance of 30cm (12”) from any hard surface.
  • It has an integral PVC netting roof, with standing room inside.
  • Comes with a system of water-filled ballast bags which create additional stability.
  • A securely fitted inflatable mattress (with pump included), provides a comfortable, but easily transportable base.
  • Several fun viewing panels and the white PVC netting walls, allow carers to see in, and help to create a sense of space for the person inside.

Safespace Siesta and Siesta Hi-Lo

The Siesta is designed for those who may have a lot of movement and strength, but are unable or disinclined to pull up or climb over the high sides. The customised design makes it suitable for those with complex or varying nursing needs and those requiring a hoist. It’s robust ‘flex-out’ sides can be kicked, punched, head-butted or rocked against, and help keep a person safe from injuries and from falling against hard surfaces, for example during seizures.

Safespace Siesta Hi-Lo is designed for those who require a greater degree of nursing care and the flexibility of a height adjustable platform, the Siesta Hi-Lo provides a 41cms range of travel to raise the top of the mattress to allow a comfortable working height for carers.

Key features

  • The Siesta is made with the same heavy duty PVC fabric as all our products, supported on a strong frame and base. The walls flex out to absorb impact and so require a clearance of 25cm (10”) from any hard surface.
  • The Siesta can be jet washed, or the fabric can be easily removed for steam-cleaning, to support infection control.
  • Opening panels can be zipped open and clipped back, or rolled up for ease of access.
  • Viewing panels allow in light, create a sense of space, and facilitate observation and communication between client and carer, which can be restricted by other designs of high sided beds. A viewing panel at the foot end can allow the client to watch television or enjoy sensory products.
  • The Siesta has a raised platform to accommodate mobile hoisting and an open top to accommodate ceiling track hoisting. The Siesta comes with a 15cm (6”) mattress as standard.

Safespace Cosyfit

The Cosyfit is designed for individuals with limited mobility and is robust enough for adults and children who may rock, thrash about, push or kick. For those with the ability to stand, walk, pull to standing or climb, we usually recommend the Safespace. The Cosyfit also creates a soft safe environment for those who may otherwise be restricted to a wheelchair.

Key features

  • 3 reinforced padded side panels and 1 opening side with a mattress as standard.
  • Can be pushed against a wall where space is limited.
  • Front panel can be fully opened and fastened to the side, providing a large open area.
  • The low floor makes it easy to step into.
  • Easy to dismantle and store.
  • Can be used with a ceiling track hoist or adapted for use with a mobile hoist.

The Cosyfit Hi-Lo

The Cosyfit Hi-Lo is a high-sided, height adjustable bed with Trendelenburg option. Designed for those who cannot stand, but who have the strength or capacity to rock, thrash, push or kick, and so need safer bed sides. It is used both at home as well as in residential and care settings.

Key features

  • Comprises a Cosyfit bed on a robust Hi-Lo bed base with electrically controlled height-adjustable and Trendelenburg options.
  • The Cosyfit can be removed from the Hi-Lo base and both can be used separately. If used without the Cosyfit, the Hi-lo will need the headboard and tailboard – see Accessories.
  • Suitable for use with ceiling track and mobile floor hoists.
  • 3 padded side panels and 1 opening soft side with a mattress as standard.
  • The padded sides can be pushed close to a wall where space is limited.
  • Front panel can be fully opened and fastened to the side, providing a large open area.
