Dementia Action Week runs from 15th-21st May 2023 and aims to raise awareness and give support to those living with dementia and Alzheimer's and their families or carers. Dementia describes a set of symptoms that over time can affect memory, problem-solving, language and behaviour. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia. Dementia is not a natural part of aging; it is caused when a disease damages nerve cells in the brain. Nerve cells carry messages between different parts of the brain, and to other parts of the body; as more nerve cells are damaged, the brain becomes less able to work properly.

Comfort, safety and dignity are crucial foundations of dementia care as those affected find it harder to look after themselves. John Preston has been providing advice and products for care homes, trusts and domestic settings for many years and we continue to review and improve on our product offering to bring the best solutions to our clients. Providing visual prompts to aid memory recall, comfortable seating to relieve distress and fall and pressure alarms to ensure clients are safe in their homes are some of the solutions we provide.

Cefndy Dementia Friendly Bathroom Accessories

Having a contrasting colour for toilet seats and frames can help those with dementia related recognition difficulties. Using highly visible colours can help the user recognise and understand their environment, bringing dignity and confidence to the user. Cefndy also have high contrast grab rails and bars for use in toilets and bathrooms.

Alerta Wireless Deluxe Alertamat

The Wireless Deluxe Alertamat fall prevention mat is a robust, long-life luxury carpet Alertamat system for use on the floor. It activates an alarm to provide the caregiver with advanced warning when a user at risk of falling leaves their safe zone. It can also be used at doorways and thresholds for those at risk of wandering. Use this in conjunction with the Alerta Wall Point Receiver.

Wireless Alerta Detect

The Wireless Alerta Detect connects to the Alerta Wall Point Receiver and can function as a stand-alone unit independent of a nurse call system. Alerta Detect uses infrared technology to trigger an alert when body movement is detected within the range of the infrared beam. Keep this on a bedside or mounted at doorways for dementia sufferers at risk of falling or wandering.

In addition to the Alertamat and Detect shown above, Alerta offer a wide range of care alarm and fall prevention solutions, check them out here.
