Firefly 2.5 Wheelchair Handbike – Electric Wheelchair Power Add-On

The Firefly 2.5 Wheelchair Handbike is the latest generation of our best-selling electric wheelchair power add-on. Designed to transform compatible manual wheelchairs into powerful, versatile electric handbikes, the Firefly 2.5 combines a 350W motor, speeds of up to 12 mph and a real-world range of up to 15 miles with an easy-to-use quick-release attachment system.

The latest Firefly introduces a host of improvements, including a full-colour display with haptic touch feedback, dual disc brakes, an upgraded lighting system, dual kickstands, a locking headset, redesigned thumb throttles and a lighter Panasonic lithium-ion battery. A newly designed 6061 aluminium frame uses custom-shaped tubing to help absorb shock and vibration while remaining strong and lightweight. New handlebar grip ends also help keep your hands securely positioned while riding.

Easy Wheelchair Attachment

The Firefly 2.5 retains the proven attachment system of the Firefly 2.0. It can attach to most rigid and folding-frame wheelchairs and is also compatible with selected wheelchairs featuring swing-away legrests. Once the initial installation and adjustment have been completed, the Firefly can be attached to or removed from your wheelchair in seconds. The quick-release centre frame separates without tools, making the Firefly easier to transport in a car, take when travelling or store when not required.

Powerful 350W Electric Assistance

Powered by a 350W, 36V geared brushless hub motor, the Firefly 2.5 provides five speed modes and a maximum speed of up to 12 mph / 19 km/h. Lower speed settings provide excellent control when manoeuvring around shops, buildings and other tighter environments, while the Firefly is equally at home tackling hills, grass and outdoor routes. Forward and reverse controls are positioned within easy reach, giving you excellent manoeuvrability in a wide variety of situations.

Panasonic Lithium-Ion Battery

The improved 36V 7Ah / 252Wh Panasonic lithium-ion battery provides a real-world range of up to 15 miles / 24 km or more, depending on conditions and use. The lightweight battery uses Panasonic GA cells and is rated for more than 3,000 charge cycles. An additional battery can also be purchased separately for users who want to extend their available range. A full charge takes approximately three hours when the battery is completely discharged. The battery also features a convenient USB-A port for charging compatible mobile devices.

Wheelchair Compatibility

The Firefly 2.5 is compatible with a wide range of rigid and folding wheelchairs, provided suitable mounting points are available. It can also work with certain wheelchairs featuring swing-away front legs; however, please contact us before purchasing to confirm suitability. The standard Firefly is suitable for wheelchairs with seat widths from approximately 14" to 22". Narrower configurations are possible as detailed in our compatibility documentation. For wheelchairs with seat widths below 12", a custom-built frame option is available. The attachment system supports the following round frame tube diameters:

22.2mm, 25.4mm, 28.6mm, 30mm, 31.8mm and 34.9mm
(7/8", 1", 1 1/8", 1.2", 1 1/4" and 1 3/8")

Alternative brackets are available for certain oval wheelchair frame tubes, including those found on selected Quickie Helium, Xenon and Q7 models.

The standard clamp pack includes 4 × 1.25" clamps, 4 × small shims, 4 × medium shims, 4 × large shims. Please see our help and advice information for further guidance on selecting and fitting shims.

Speed & Local Highway Regulations

The Firefly cannot to be used on the public roads in the UK as it doesn't meet the requirements of the British highway regulations. The Firefly is capable of 12 mph but please note that the legal speed limit for using such a device in public places is 4mph in the UK. A programmable speed limiter is fitted as standard and the speed should be limited to comply with local legislation. It is also advisable to limit the top speed for more vulnerable users including young children.

UK Wheelchair Services

If your chair was issued to you on loan from your local wheelchair services, it is important you check that they approve the fitting of a Firefly to their wheelchair before you place an order. Some wheelchair services prohibit the modification of chairs in any way as part of the condition of loan.

Firefly on Children's Wheelchairs

Firefly is designed to be easy to use by a wide range of age groups with the appropriate motor skills, spacial and danger awareness and cognitive function. We can supply a smaller frame for use on children's wheelchairs. This is suitable for wheelchairs that are between 10" and 12" wide. Call us on 028 92 677077 for a chat about this if needed. For children under 14 resident in the UK you must opt in for the speed limited control box option to limit top speed. Children under 14 should be supervised by a responsible adult at all times whilst operating their Firefly. As a rule of thumb, the Firefly wheelchair attachment is not suitable for users under 10 years old.

Airline Information

Access the manufacturer's Air Worthiness certificates from the Downloads tab . Contact your airline prior to travelling however rather than simply relying on these documents as various airlines have differing policies.

Manufacturer's Warranty

Your Firefly comes with a 1 year warranty. The battery has a 3 month warranty and is subject to you retaining a charge of between 20-80%. You must check this charge level if not using your Firefly to ensure it remains in optimum condition. We advise keeping the battery charge at between 20-80% for the lifetime of the product.

General Maintenance

Just like a bicycle, the Firefly also requires basic ongoing maintenance and safety checks to keep you safe out on the road. Please remember to check your motor's axle nuts at least every 3-6 months to ensure they are tight. If they are loose, they should be tightened using either an 18mm box wrench, 18mm socket & ratchet or at the very least a large adjustable wrench. The correct torque value is 40Nm. Any bike shop can do this process if you are not comfortable doing so. If you are getting a flat tire changed at a shop, then please let the mechanic know the torque value of 40Nm as standard bicycle axle nuts are tightened much less than our motor.

I was looking for a power add on system for my wheelchair, I saw that John Preston Healthcare did them. I contacted them, then I was put in contact with a man called Francis. He came out to the house did a Home Demonstration. I then ordered the Power Add On I had it within 6 weeks. Francis came out again to hand the Power Add On over he did all the last minute adjustments to make it fit my chair. An amazing company from start to finish I'd highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a wheelchair Power Add on system. No amount of stars would be enough for a rating for this company.

I just have to share with you the laughs and joy the attachment of the Firefly has made. Today it was finally fitted and given a test drive and I have never laughed so much for a long time. Even people passing me stopped to watch it and said what a brilliant machine. Now I can play with it all I like and I am sure enjoys lots more laughs as I get used to using the brakes! I am 110% delighted and will be using it a lot as it has brought another dimension to my life following recent wrist surgery. I notice that the battery is 36v which is higher than the Firefly booklet describes but I do wish to purchase another one so any help or direction that way would be most helpful. Thank you so so much for all your help I am one very highly delighted Firefly user and it's amazing.
